In a future where death from illness is almost unheard of, Katherine Mortenhoe’s (Romy Schneider) diagnosis with an incurable disease makes her an instant and unwitting celebrity, and TV boss Vincent Ferriman (Harry Dean Stanton) wants to build a reality TV show around her final days. But when she refuses to be filmed, he cajoles cameraman Roddy (Harvey Keitel) into having cameras surgically implanted in his eyes. Roddy is then tasked with filming Katherine without her knowledge, with everything he sees then featuring on Ferriman’s new reality TV show ‘Death Watch’…

Bertrand Tavernier, France 1980, 15, 91mins

“The best dystopian sci-fi you’ve never seen”

“An exciting tale about self-respect and personal autonomy in a society where privacy and personal identity are being steadily eroded and it’s as topical today as when it was made”

“Utterly prophetic”

“It is a prescient but lugubrious sci-fi satire about reality television, though a more low-key satire can hardly be imagined”

“A true cult classic”
