Nine years after Discovery’s fateful mission to Jupiter, a joint Russian and American crew on board the Russian-built Leonov head to the far reaches of the solar system in search of answers. Determined to solve the mystery of HAL 9000’s apparent malfunction, and Dave Bowman’s cryptic final message, Dr Heywood Floyd (Roy Scheider), R. Chandra (Bob Balaban) and Tanya Kirbuk (Helen Mirren) slowly discern what happened to the Discovery’s crew, and the significance of the huge black monolith floating in space nearby…

Peter Hyams, USA 1984, PG, 116mins

“A vastly underappreciated sequel with a fine lead performance by Roy Scheider. Director Peter Hyams took a huge gamble, and succeeds beautifully”
Fantastica Daily

“Hyams’ sequel to Kubrick’s big daddy of sci-fi movies may not have the novelty of 2001: A Space Odyssey, but it is still a better film than anyone could have dared to expect”
Time Out
