It’s love at first sight when Harry (Anthony Edwards) meets Julie (Mare Winningham) at the La Brea Tar Pits. But after a memorable day together, Harry’s alarm fails and he misses their follow-up date later that night. While trying to reach her on a pay phone, he intercepts a chilling message that a nuclear attack will hit Los Angeles in one hour. With the city fast descending into chaos, Harry scrambles to find Julia and get them to safety before the missiles hit…

Steve De Jarnatt, US 1988, 15, 87mins

“[De Jarnatt] sets things up in a very traditional manner, gives the audience something they’ve seen a hundred times, gives them something they think they know, makes them comfortable, then twists the knife”
Den of Geek

“Cleverly written, authentically staged and sympathetically played, it’s brave, uncompromising, and above all, frighteningly believable”
Time Out

“Much of the movie’s diabolical effectiveness comes from the fact that it never reveals, until the very end, whether the nightmare is real…”
Roger Ebert

The screening will be preceded by a talk from writer/director Mark J. Blackman who will be examining Miracle Mile’s long road to production, its slow burn to cult status, and how its success in being the bleakest and most effective apocalypse thriller is crystallised by the panic-stricken love story at its core.
