In a near future where water is a precious and dwindling resource, hardened survivors scrape and struggle to get by on a barren land that has withered and grown wretched. Farmer Ernest Holm (Michael Shannon) lives on this harsh frontier with his two children Jerome (Kodi Smit-McPhee) and Mary (Elle Fanning), and between fending off bandits and working local supply routes, hopes one day to rejuvenate the soil. But Mary’s boyfriend, Flem Lever (Nicholas Hoult), has bigger ideas, and schemes to steal Ernest’s land for himself…

Jake Paltrow, USA 2014, 15, 100mins

“There hasn’t been as convincing a sci-fi dustbowl story since the original Mad Max.”
The Guardian

“The setting is futuristic, but the themes are ancient in Jake Paltrow’s eccentric merger of frontier western and science-fiction gadgetry.”
New York Times

The film will be preceded by a talk from Dr Daanish Mustafa, Reader in Politics and Environment at King’s College London, who will examine why it is that, with water in abundance the world over, only the poorest communities suffer from droughts and water scarcity.
